Absolute vs Relative Links for Images and Files 2 Years ago Karma: 3
Hi there - Whenever I select a file or image through the 'browse server' option the link inserted is always relative (files/xyz.doc) - is there a way to change it to stick to absolute by default (www.mysite.com/files/xyz.doc)... At the moment I have to tell my users to type it in manually each time which is driving them nuts..... (for technical reasons I need absolute image / file links on my site)

I too would LOVE this functionality! Perhaps it would be possible to add radio buttons in the image/hyperlink dialogs to set URL to absolute or relative?

I love JoomlaCK and use it for editing content in my pages where relative URLs are fine, but we also use it with CiviCRM to create and edit HTML newsletters which REQUIRE all absolute URLS.

Thanks for your fantastic work!

Hi mikeney,

Thank you for your reply and for your encouragement.

The 2x serious of the editor has the ability to use absolute link but it became more trouble than it worth. If you ever wanted to move your site or change your site domain then it would become a nightmare, users would have to sift thought the database to update all the links.

In the 3x serous of the editor we have decide to follow Joomla logic and only use relative links however, I can't imagine that it would be hard to build an application that would transform the relative links to absolute. Many 3rd party component all ready do this (such as AcyMailing, ccNewsletter) as standard practice.

Kindest regards,

Paul

...but isn't the issue that even the relative link doesn't work in this scenario? For me it's the biggest problem my users have!

They are in the editor - They select to upload and link to a file - then the link that's created for the browser is something like files/info.doc and it just doesn't work - They have to manually change the generated code to insert the web domain - and I can't expect my web novice users to always understand that.

Hi andybon,

The editor comes with 5 link Protocols so it depends on which 'Protocol' you have set the link to use.

1. http://
2. https://
3. ftp://
4. news://
5. <other>

If you use http:// it will naturally be looking to link externally (to use a full path) E.g:http:// www.google.co.uk. if you want the editor to link internal you need to change the Protocol to <Other>.

Please see:

If this is a user related issue went linking to documents, then the 'jdoclink' plugin maybe the best way to go! It's built to link to internal documents and comes preconfigured to use the <other> protocol by default.

Kindest regards,

Paul

Thanks Paul - Really appreciated the detailed and comprehensive response... Here's where I think the JCK Editor logic breaks down though...

1) Editing an article the user selects the 'Link' option from the toolbar....
2) By default the http:// option is there - so far so good and you can just type your URL, but...
3) If you choose to 'Browse Server' and pick a file, then JCK keeps forms this hyperlink: something.doc

You see what I mean? A user follows the above steps and would expect the link to work... The average person wouldn't know they then had to edit either the http:// protocol or insert the web domain in front of the link....

Hi Andybon,

I have raised this issue in the known issue forum and will work to improve the useability in the next release.

Please see: www.joomlackeditor.com/forum/38-known-is...f-from-url-link#2274

As mentioned, the 'jdoclink' plugin maybe the best way to go for your user as it is built for internal linking to documents and comes preconfigured to use the <other> protocol by default.

Thanks,

Paul

I just want to add my 5 cents to this topic...

Having the editor insert only relative links to images, makes the editor pretty much useless for any site, working with newsletter components etc.

A relative link to an image in an email is a no-go, when a newsletter is being opened in the receivers mailbox, and because of this behaviour I have had 6 customers this year alone, who was forced to switch to a different editor - all coming from JoomlaCK 3.x.

So in my humble opinion, you should consider adding the option to choose whether you wish to use relative or absolute links, in the plugin configuration.

Edit: For people who need Absolute links on images asap, I have described a quick fix in this message.

Hi All,

Just ot let you know that the link protocol now uses <other> by default in the new 3.4.6 version and if you entre a full URL path it will automatically change to http://. This was done to address the user related issue, with the link <protocol> defaulting to: http://, which caused the files/info.doc issue when not set.

Please see: www.joomlackeditor.com/downloads/jck-edi...logs/230-version-346 > Changes: > point 2, for more info.

Please note that this now works that same way as the jDocLink plugin, which is built for linking to internal files.

Kindest regards,

Paul
